My supervisor gave me an extra day off and told me to rest well. So I took a hotel room and painted for 2 days.
Me and my Colors
My earliest recollection of art was in kindergarten at a Catholic school, where learning is done through coloring books. At that age, I colored my books not the same way as the other kids in class. I select hues that are different. I never follow the normal red rose or blue sky. I like violet, gold, midnight blue and chartreuse. It helps that mom gave me crayon in 45 colors. I can still remember the other kids telling me that I will be scolded by the nuns because my human figures were shaded with orange and the flying kite is violet. I just see objects in a different color. I perceive concrete and rocks being blue, wood being red and plants life got to have yellow on it.
Because I like my works looking lively, I remained a colorist but now strongly influenced by the Muslims of my hometown in Zamboanga. In their art, colors are bright and sharp where red hue has to be evidently red, green has to be really green and yellow has to be clearly yellow. They also have preference of magenta, lime, cobalt and fuscia.
Zamboanga is my favorite subject too. It is like painting a historical document of my city. As years go by, the city changes. Crowded residences are demolished (Laudry Day and Tumaga River 2). Open fields are replaced by a school building (Summertime). Ruins are restored (Fort Pilar series). I am glad I made paintings of these unassuming but interesting sites before it were replaced and forgotten. I also like to do animals and religious art.
